The Cruiser page
I've got a 1984 FJ60. Used to have
a 1976 FJ40, but it was way too
small for me and all my crap, so I sold it. Pictures are on the way
sooner or later...
Update: I've got a 1982 BJ42 now, too. It's the same size as my
'76 40 was, but I am convinced I can make it work. I may be
delusional, and I may need a trailer later—or I might just use
the 60 for longer expeditions. :)
BJ42 Specs
It's mostly stock, except for some lift springs, shackles, and 33"
mud tires. Lots of bodywork has been replaced with 1/8" steel.
Hopefully moving to Colorado will slow down the rusting, so I don't
have to learn to weld just yet. I'm not planning on redoing the body
until winter of 2008-09, if I can help it. I'll have to replace a
couple of body mount brackets sometime in summer or fall of 2007,
though, and patch a hole in the floor.
I have installed an Aqualu
drop-down storage tailgate on it, and it's going to have a Metal Tech rear bumper with tire
and cooler carrier shortly. :)
FJ60 Specs
It's mostly stock, except for about 5" of lift and 33" mud tires.
And a Mercedes turbo-diesel engine. Also, it has no transfer case or
driveshafts at the moment. :)
And, courtesy of a truck I parted out, it's even got a complete OEM tool kit! Yay!
FJ60 Plans
This section is here to remind me what I was planning to do at some
point in the future... There are "soon" mods, "soonish" mods, and
"someday" mods in the list.
Soon
- Mercedes diesel conversion is (still)
underway, but we're aiming to be done by mid-September, say.
- I plan to use the stock instrument cluster. If that proves to be
too much trouble, or too inaccurate, I might look at using an
Autometer 1410 4-in-1 gauge, if it'll fit in the
stock cluster. That will duplicate the stock functionality
exactly, and hopefully more accurately.
- install Yakima rack
(arriving any day now...)
- aluminum tailgate
panel (prototype now installed)
- get a rubber antenna to replace the busted retractable one
- install new battery
cables (already made, sitting in the garage!) and inline
big-ass (175A?) fuse
- mount a pair of fire extinguishers (hey, at least one's
in the truck now!)
- tune up the
Megasquirt unit's cold-start
enrichment (sold the EFI, and it worked great when I sold
it)
- EL
lightstrips for night lighting in the rear (ordered two 2.5-foot
green ones, and one's installed now -- the other may never be)
Soonish
- aluminum panels made from old road signs in the cargo area (left
side is now done, and looks only partially like ass...)
- add a pair of 12-volt outlets to the cargo area
- sliding
rear windows! (sitting in the garage waiting for the diesel
conversion to be done)
- install a DC/AC inverter in the cargo area
- repair the rear defroster traces (involves removing and
replacing the rear tint film...ugh)
- install taskled.com dome lights front and rear
- hardwire a 19"
Hella map light up front, and maybe get a shorter plug-in
one to use in the Subaru
- install the
inclinometer/altimeter that's sitting on the workbench (fuck
it, it's ugly)
- new hood bumpers
- get a bucket pump for gear
oil
- join TLCA
- Toyota service manuals
- H4 E-code headlamps
from rallylights.com are now
installed. They also made me a nice wiring harness
based on Wayne Tangen's harnesses (information is
here and here).
- create a drawer
system for the cargo area (needs more work)
- rear bumper &
tire carrier (it's mostly done: still needs a receiver hitch,
side protection, and paint)
- install some auxiliary rear lights
- front winch bumper (Jack's waiting on me for this one)
- passenger-side grab A-pillar grab handle
- remove the chrome trim
Someday
